Mike Teagarden, 66, passed away on April 5th, 2025, in Valley Grove, WV, surrounded by his loving family. He was a wonderful Husband, Great Father, Best Father-in-Law and Pap.
Mike was born on June 23rd, 1958, in the state of Delaware.
As a teenager, Mike called Claysville, Pennsylvania his home. Mike was a McGuffey High School graduate, class of 1976. After high school, he briefly worked for Allied Electric as a delivery driver. In 1979, he began working for Penn DOT as an equipment operator and equipment instructor. After nearly 28 years, he retired early from Penn DOT. The work that Mike was most proud of was working with his son, Joe, and daughter-in-law, as an equipment operator. In 2022, he and Peggy made Valley Grove, West Virginia their new home in a “castle on the hill”. Peggy will miss the sound of Mike coming home and saying “Lucy, I’m home. Where are you?"
Mike is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ernie and Reita Finley, who he fondly reminisced about spending time with; his paternal grandparents, William and Turis Teagarden, with whom he enjoyed spending time with on their farm; a very special father-in-law, Reverend Giard Sayre, of Claysville, Pennsylvania.
Mike found great enjoyment in traveling to Michigan, to work on projects with his oldest son, Jay. He had a natural talent for fixing almost anything, gardening, wood-working and metal-working. As a car enthusiast, one of his favourite memories was a family trip with his wife, Peggy, his son Joe and his daughter-in-law, Marla, to Tennessee with the family’s 1967 Firebird to attend a car show hosted by Stacey David of Gearz. Mike enjoyed attending the Teagarden-Robinson family reunions and travelling to Cottageville, WV with his wife, Peggy, to assist her with family history research. Mike loved to meet new people. He generally just loved to talk, but he most loved telling stories and jokes, especially “Dad” jokes. Mike was an avid golfer, who was proud of his not only one, but TWO, holes-in-one! Mike was a good-natured man who never met a stranger.
In October of 1978, he married the greatest love of his life, Peggy (Margaret) Ann Sayre, who is survived by him. He is also survived by his two children, Jay Michael Teagarden (Janine) of Caseville, Michigan and Joe (Marla) Teagarden of Claysville, Pennsylvania; 2 grandsons, Jason and Jonah; five grand-dogs; River, KitKat, Sophie, Jessie and Beau; his sister, Beth Teagarden (Jay Plants) of Claysville, Pennsylvania; his mother-in-law, Alice Sayre of Washington; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the honorary grandfather to Juan Cardenas Morales of Colombia, South America; and Samson, Zainab, Ehis and Ivie George of Highwood, Illinois. The pride and joy of Mike’s life were his two sons, Jay and Joe and the gift of being “Pop” to Jason and Jonah.
As one of Mike’s final acts of kindness, he donated his body to West Virginia University’s Medical Science program, with the hope of learning something that may be helpful to someone else.
A private burial in Claysville Cemetery in Claysville, Pennsylvania will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to send a card to the family at P.O.
