Herman Franklin Jackson, age 94, of Claysville, PA, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018.
Born December 29, 1923 in Washington, PA, he is the son of the late James W. Jackson and Viola B. (Whiteman) Jackson.
Herman was a 1939 graduate of Claysville High School and resided in Washington County his entire life with the exception of his military service. Herman enlisted in the United States Army on August 1, 1944 during WWII. He was a Crewman and Rifle Expert serving in two successful battles and campaigns, one in the Southern Philippines and one in the Ryukyus Islands. He was discharged in January 1946 having been decorated with the Purple Heart Award, Army Garrison Force Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Service Star and a WWII Victory Medal.
Herman was a former member of the Claysville American Legion Post #639.
He married his wife, Martha Jane (Eversole) Jackson on August 16, 1954 and together they raised their family in Claysville, PA while Herman worked as a welder in the steel industry. Retiring after 25 years from Richmond Steel, Herman could often be seen walking around Claysville where he was loved by many.
Music was one of Herman’s hobbies. He liked country music and in his younger days could be found at local square dances both dancing and serving as a caller. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a passion for the outdoors and sportsmanship.
He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Jackson, of Washington, PA; five grandchildren, Ernest Scott (Amanda Sterling) Conley, of Avella, PA, Tyler Martin Conley, of Amity, PA, Kayla Conley (T.J.) Yilit, of Claysville, PA, Jamie Jean Wilson, of Washington, PA, and Jeremy Franklin Curtis Wilson, of Washington, PA; eight great-grandchildren with one on the way.
Herman was the last of his 12 siblings and was preceded in death by his wife in 2013 and a son, Herman Franklin “Butchie” Jackson, Jr.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018, from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. with the funeral service to immediately follow at 1:00 P.M. at Kesterson-Rush Funeral Home, LLC., 3275 W. Roy Furman Hwy, Rogersville, PA., 15359. Telephone: (724)-499-5181 with Pastor Mike Matthews, officiating. He will be laid to rest privately with full military honors by the Claysville American Legion Post #639 at Claysville Cemetery, Claysville, PA.
