Helen Sharp McDaniel-Dunham, age 87, of Waynesburg, PA, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2017 while under the care of Rolling Meadows Nursing & Rehabilitation, Waynesburg, PA.
Born September 11, 1929, in Monumental, WV, she is the daughter of the late John F. and Mildred (Mason) Sharp.
Even though the family was not well to do, her mother found the means to get her tap dance lessons and performed around the state. She also enjoyed singing and playing musical instruments with her oldest sister Naomi. She was proud of the fact that as a young child she was a good speller and competed against others on the radio. She missed winning the spelling bee by one word. Helen was very proud to be a West Virginia native at heart. Her famous quote was, " If they're from WV, I love them, they are family." She attended Waynesburg VoTech at age 40 and graduated the top of her LPN class. Helen was an LPN for many years at the Old Curry Home in Waynesburg, PA. She traveled with her first husband all over the US for his work as a heavy equipment operator. In later years she and her second husband enjoyed many bus trips while his health allowed. She always said she had "Two of the best.” (meaning her husbands) She had a few very special friends that will miss talking with her, Elva Dee Wilson, whom she has known her entire life and still talked to weekly. Josephine Hart, her best friend and former classmate, her beloved sister, Ruby, and friend John whom she talked to often and enjoyed having coffee with. Helen was a member of the First Nazarene Church in Waynesburg, PA, where she helped organize Bible Studies. Helen enjoyed her word searches. She kept a journal and calendar that she wrote in everyday of her life.
Surviving are her four children, David McDaniel, of Waynesburg, PA, Sandy (Bill) Smoljanovich, of Florida, Janice (Mark) Grimes, of Jefferson, PA, and Kathy Bartolovich, of Florida; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruby Ater-Simpson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, J.R. McDaniel and Ray Dunham; sister Naomi Wilson.
